Happy Thanksgiving!
We read a book called "Gracias the Thanksgiving Turkey" and spoke about what it meant to be thankful. After reading that book the children wrote letters to their parents/caregivers to thank you for what everything that you do for them. Here are those letters:

Simile Portrait Poems
In our writers workshop we have been working on making our writing more exciting to read. We have done this in several different ways. We have used adjectives, show not tells, and similes. We spent quite some time focusing on similies so we decided to write a portrait poem using only similes. The students were told to choose any person that they wanted to; but they had to be a real person not fictitious. We did this activity line by line and then I checked over them and had the kids polish their poems. Here are the results of that activity:

Action Poems
We began the year with a review of the parts of speech. As a way of assessing their knowledge, we wrote action poems that involved the use of nouns, verbs and adjectives. This was an in-class assignment which was first modeled by Ms. Rubin. The students had an opportunity to brainstorm with each other to get ideas for each section of the poem and then they wrote. The following posts are a result of this lesson.
